A ketogenic diet is not right for everyone,
and it is not suitable if you have cirrhosis or
advanced liver disease. In cirrhosis, glycogen stores run down quickly
overnight and the body starts breaking down muscle for energy, which is why clinical
guidance recommends regular carbohydrate through the day and a carbohydrate-containing
snack before bed — the opposite of what a keto diet does. Keto is also not
recommended in pregnancy, in type 1 diabetes, or if you take medication for
diabetes or blood pressure without your doctor adjusting it first.
These recipes are here for people eating
keto for general weight loss. If you have any liver condition, talk to your doctor
or an Accredited Practising Dietitian before starting — and look at the
standard collection,
which is built for liver-friendly eating.
